Pineapple sasive recipe | pineapple gojju recipe | pineapple menaskai recipe | pineapple curry with detailed step by step photos.
Pineapple gojju is a traditional Karnataka side dish recipe. It is a sweet and tangy sauce/gravy/chutney made from pineapple, ground coconut, jaggery, and other roasted Indian spices.
This coconut gravy is a base for most of the gojju recipes and a variety of vegetables like raw mango, cucumber, okra, tomatoes, onions, brinjal, capsicum/bell pepper, and fruits like mangoes, grapes, pineapple are added to the gravy.
This pineapple gojju goes well with hot steamed rice, idly, dosa, uthappam, pundi Gatti/kadubu, and Indian flatbreads like roti and chapati, etc.
Pineapple is a tropical fruit that is loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc. This fruit is available year-round in California. Pineapple is a versatile fruit, a lot of recipes can be prepared using this fruit.
In Indian cuisine, pineapple is used in milkshakes, rasam, side dishes like gojju, Kesari bath, fruit salads, and ice creams.
Pineapple sasive is a sweet and sour delicacy typically served at weddings and festivals. It is also called "Ananas menaskai or menasinakayi sasive" in Udupi and Mangalore region.
Ananas means pineapple, menasinakayi means chili and sasive means mustard in Kannada. Gojju is pronounced as "gujju" in English. In Banglore and Mysore region, it is called "Pineapple Gojju".
Pineapple menaskai recipe calls for fresh coconut, jaggery, bydagi red chilis, sesame seeds, urad dal, channa dal, pineapple as main ingredients. Jaggery is added to give a sweet and sour flavor to this recipe.
Bydagi red chili is one of the red chili variety available in Karnataka. It gives a beautiful deep reddish hue to the pineapple gojju. But here I have used a normal red chili variety. You can use Kashmiri red chili as well.
This spicy, sweet and tangy pineapple gojju is a no onion and no garlic recipe, so it is a perfect side dish for the festival season. Also, it is a mandatory dish served on a green banana leaf during weddings and special occasions in the northern part of Karnataka.
Further, it is a vegan recipe as there are no dairy ingredients involved in this recipe.
Ananas menaskai sasive is delicious with hot steamed rice, vegetable pulao, roti, chapati, puri, etc. My ammama(grandmother) makes raw mango gojju often at home, especially in the summer. The gravy ingredients remain the same and she just replaces the fruits and veggies as per the season. I will soon try to post my favorite mango gojju.

Pineapple is one of my favorite fruit and I would often buy from the farmers market, Ralphs, and Whole Foods. I prefer to buy pre-cut pineapple in bulk and prepare a variety of recipes including pineapple rasam, pineapple Kesari, pineapple juice, etc. For this recipe, you can either use fresh or frozen pineapples too.
