Southekai hasi gojju | Cucumber hasi gojju is a northern Karnataka recipe. Southekayi means raw  cucumber and hasi gojju means raw sauce/gravy in Kannada. It is a refreshing raw cucumber side dish recipe.

Basically, this southekayi hasi gojju doesn't require any heating process except for tempering/seasoning. The main ingredients are grounded and combined with cucumber in the raw form. In short, it is a raw cucumber with green chutney recipe.

Raw cucumber hasi gojju is served before sambar and rasam. It is a traditional Karnataka recipe mainly served on auspicious occasions in Udipi, Karnataka. It can be eaten with roti, chapati, akki roti, curd rice, hot steamed plain rice, etc.

This southekayi hasi gojju can be prepared within 5 to 10 mins. My loving ammama (grandma) makes this tasty southekayi hasi gojju dish often at home. This is a perfect side dish for the hot summer to keep our body cool and hydrated.

This cucumber gojju is very light on the stomach and brings fresh flavors of raw spices and herbs. It is a very healthy and tasty side dish. If you like cucumber then you should definitely try this dish. It is a versatile recipe. Recipe: Southekayi hasi gojju | Raw cucumber hasi gojju | Cucumber Coconut Curry.

Serves - 4
Course - Raw side dish.

Ingredients for southekai gojju:

  1. Cucumber - 1 cup diced.
  2. Salt - 1 tsp/as per taste.
  3. water - 100 ml.
To grind:
  1. Coconut -  Half cup shredded. 
  2. Green chili - 1
  3. Jaggery - 1 tsp 
  4. Roasted gram* - 1 tbsp 
  5. Cilantro - 3 sprigs
  6. Curry leaves - 4 
  7. Tamarind - grape size/ half tsp paste.
  8. Turmeric - 1/4 tsp optional.
To temper:
  1. Oil - 1 tbsp
  2. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
  3. Channa dal - 1 tsp
  4. Urad dal - 1 tsp
  5. Red chili - 1  
  6. Curry leaves - 4
  7. Asafoetida/ hing - a pinches.

How to prepare southekayi hasi gojju/cucumber gojju?

  1. Wash and dice the cucumber into small cubes and set aside. (Note: You can peel the skin if it is thick)
  2. Take a blender jar and put all the ingredients. (Note: Refer to grind under the ingredients).
  3. Grind it into a coarse paste with little water.
  4. Put the chopped cucumber in a bowl.
  5. Add the ground paste to the cucumber.
  6. Mix it well. Add water as per your consistency.
  7. Heat the oil in a pan on medium flame. Add mustard seeds, let it splutter. Then add urad and channa dal, fry for 30 seconds. Put some curry leaves, red chili, green chili, and finally hing/asafoetida. Switch off the flame.
  8. Now put the seasonings in the cucumber mixture and stir it well.
  9. Cucumber hasi gojju / southekayi hasi gojju is ready to be served with plain rice, roti, chapati, rasam, Gujarati kadhi, etc.

How to make southekayi hasi gojju/cucumber gojju with step by step pictures?

4. Put the chopped cucumber in a bowl.

5. Add the ground paste to the cucumber.

6. Mix it well. Add water as per your consistency.
