Moong dal palak is a lentil and spinach based gravy. It is a protein-rich dish made with boiled yellow lentils, spinach, onion, ginger, garlic, along with seasoned Indian spices.

Paruppu keerai masiyal is a healthy and nutritious side dish that pairs well with rice, roti, poori, and chapati. Palak means spinach and dal/dhal means lentils in Hindi.

Moong dal is an essential ingredient in Indian cooking. It is a vital source of protein for vegetarians. Yellow lentils are also called moong dal in Hindi, Pasi paruppu/payatham paruppu in Tamil, hesaru bele in Kannada, and cheruparipu in Malayalam. It is a very popular lentil variety in India. You can make several recipes using these lentils.

Palak Dal is super easy to prepare and requires basic ingredients that are already available in your kitchen. It is a vegan recipe and diabetic-friendly too. It is quite light on the stomach and easy to digest. Dal palak is a nourishing recipe and a perfect dish for kids and diet watchers. You can also make this recipe with no onion and no garlic as well.

Apart from moong dal, keerai masiyal can be made with Toor dal, masoor dal, and channa dal as well. Moong dal is a versatile lentil where many recipes can be prepared with.

This paruppu keerai masiyal has a creamy and buttery texture. It gives a soft and smooth consistency when dal and spinach are cooked together. You can even cook this in an Instant Pot. But, I prefer a pressure cooker for this recipe which is easy and also a fast way of cooking.

Spinach dal is our family's favorite side dish. I often make this recipe and love to have it with hot steamed basmati rice along with carrot beans stir fry or carrot stir fry. Plus, I love to add a dash of melted ghee on top which makes the entire meal aromatic, and wholesome.
