Mullangi Poriyal Recipe | Radish Poriyal Recipe | Radish Stir Fry with detailed step by step pictures. A South Indian style radish curry recipe that goes well with rice, roti, phulkas, and chapathi. Mullangi refers to radish and poriyal means stir fry in Tamil. Mullangi poriyal is a side dish made from white radish, sauteed onion, Indian spices, and grated coconut. It tastes great with Sambar, rasam, and curd rice.

Radish is an edible root vegetable, widely grown and consumed throughout the world. To my surprise, I never knew that radish comes in different sizes, shapes, and colors as I was only familiar with white long ones which are called the Daikon variety in India. Daikon is also known as mooli, white radish, winter radish, Chinese radish, and Japanese radish, and so on. Both the root and green leaves are edible.

After moving to the US, I was amazed to see that radish comes in red, purple, green colors as well. The red one is a European radish that looks round in shape and has elongated roots that are similar to a beet/turnip. This variety is widely available in US grocery stores and I buy them for salad purposes. Radish has high water content and a low-calorie veggie. It has a crunchy texture and one of the best veggies to have it in summer to keep ourselves hydrated.

The other names for radish curry are radish fry, mullangi curry, and mullangi fry. Also, this recipe is called as Mullangi soppu palya or mullangi soppina Palya in Kannada, mullangi vepudu in Telugu, mullangi thoran in Malayalam and mooli sabzi or mooli ki sabji in Hindi.

Last week I bought this daikon variety from an Indian grocery to make radish sambar but ended up making the radish curry. This has always happened in our home, I would plan and buy certain veggies for a particular recipe but somehow I end up making a different one. I'm sure you could relate to that.

You can make a lot of recipes using white radish. Though radish is one of the most nutritious veggies, I rarely buy them because of the strong pungent odor. I hate that smell. But in this radish poriyal recipe, you will not get that once it is cooked. Here, I have used coconut oil and onion to mask that odor🙌. You can even add grated ginger as well. I hope that helps to get rid of the smell. Try this mullangi poriyal for a change when you are bored with radish sambar, mullangi pachadi, mooli paratha, etc.

Further, I have given detailed health benefits of the white radish and calorie chart below. Do read them if you are interested. Besides, I have attached some of my stir fry/poriyal recipes for you, it is given at the end of the recipe. I'm sure you would find it useful. Alright, now let's get into the recipe!
