Raw banana fry is a typical South Indian stir-fry recipe. A spicy side dish made from raw green plantain, spices, and oil. I have chosen a pan-fried method which is quite healthy compared to the deep-fried version.

Raw banana Tawa fry is also a no onion no garlic recipe. It is quite simple to prepare yet tasty, and it can be made easily within 20 mins.

Vazhakkai fry pairs well with sambar, rasam, curd rice, and tastes especially great with South Indian variety rice like lemon rice, tamarind rice, coconut rice, etc. So, we make this raw banana fry regularly for our lunch and dinner.

Moreover, the vazhakkai varuval comes under the category of dry curry recipe, hence it is an ideal side dish to pack for lunch boxes, road trips, and parties. I like to eat them as a snack.

Raw banana fry Ingredients:

1. Raw banana - 2 medium
2. Coconut oil - 1 to 2 tbsp
3. Red chili powder - 2 tsp
4. Coriander powder - 2 tsp
5. Turmeric powder - Half tsp
6. Salt - 1 tsp / As per taste

Notes:

1. This raw banana fry is made from an Indian raw banana variety (Vazhakkai).

2. Raw banana can be chopped as per your choice. I prefer a thin circular shape.

3. I have mentioned coconut oil. You can use any variety like sesame oil, peanut oil, canola oil, etc. You may use more oil if you desire.

4. Adjust spice powder as per your preference.

How to make raw banana fry:

1. Wash and clean raw banana/ green plantain with water. Trim the edges and peel the skin using a peeler.

2. Chop the raw banana into thin circular shapes and immerse it in water so that it doesn't turn black.

3. Take a large non-stick pan or iron Kadai and pour one to two tbsp of coconut oil. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and required salt. (Note: Do not heat a pan at this stage).

4. Mix it well using a spatula.

5. Add the sliced vazhakkai/raw banana pieces and gently coat them in the masala oil.

6. Now turn on the flame and let it cook on a medium flame. (Note: Do not roast the raw banana on the high flame as it will not cook and stick to the pan).

7. Saute and flip the raw banana pieces in between and roast them on all sides.

8. Switch off the flame once the raw banana turns dark brown. (Note: The entire cooking process took 15 mins over a low medium flame, you may keep it for a longer time for a crispy banana fry).

9. Serve the hot raw banana fry or vazhakkai fry with sambar rice, rasam rice, and curd rice, etc.
