Raw banana fry is a typical South Indian stir-fry recipe. A
spicy side dish made from raw green plantain, spices, and oil. I
have chosen a pan-fried method which is quite healthy compared to the deep-fried version.
Raw banana Tawa fry is also a
no onion no garlic recipe. It is quite simple to prepare yet tasty, and it can be made easily within 20 mins.
Vazhakkai fry pairs well with sambar, rasam, curd rice, and tastes especially great with South Indian variety rice like lemon rice, tamarind rice, coconut rice, etc. So, we make this raw banana fry regularly
for our lunch and dinner.
Moreover, the vazhakkai varuval comes under the category of dry curry recipe, hence it is an ideal side dish to pack for lunch boxes, road trips, and parties. I like to eat them as a snack.
In South Indian cuisine, raw bananas are used in many different ways. Some of the popular recipes are Vazhakkai varuval,
Vazhakkai poriyal, Vazhakkai chips, Vazhakkai podimas, Vazhakkai bajji,
and so on.
Raw banana is also known as green plantains in English, Vazhakkai
in Tamil, Balekai in Kannada, Aratikaya in Telugu, vazhakka in Malayalam.
Varuval means roast in Tamil. So, let's get started!

1. Wash and clean raw banana/ green plantain with water. Trim the edges and peel the skin using a peeler.
2. Chop the raw banana into thin circular shapes and immerse it in
water so that it doesn't turn black.
3. Take a large non-stick pan or iron Kadai and pour one to two tbsp of coconut oil. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and required salt. (Note: Do not heat a pan at this stage).

5. Add the sliced vazhakkai/raw banana pieces and gently coat them in
the masala oil.
